The Best Things in Life are Free!

I have a theory: you can find software to do just about anything you want, and you can find it for free on the internet. The "open source" community has never been stronger, and now you can find anything from a fully functional operating system to a free website online.

I tend to prefer small, fast, efficient programs with a very specific purpose. What a program doesn't do is almost as important as what it does... In other words, I look for software without extra layers of complication and without useless "extra features." That means the programs I recommend are usually very small, very fast, and easy to use.

Except This One...

There is one notable exception to my rule about the best things being free: TextPad. This is by far the best text editor ever created, and if you are a programmer of any sort then you know how essential it is to have one of those. I honestly can't think of a single complaint against TextPad... it does exactly what I want it to do and nothing more. Features include syntax highlighting, one-click compilation/interpretation of any programming language, easy find-and-replace options, a "view document in browser" button, simple document manager, and so much more. This program is worth every penny of the $16.50 they ask for it; trust me. But even if you don't trust me, you can download a full-featured trial version that you can use indefinitely if you don't mind the occasional "Please buy me" popup. Try it. You will be hooked.

Free Software

Firefox Web Browser

A free web browser that is rapidly displacing Microsoft Internet Explorer (but not rapidly enough!). Web programmers like myself get very frustrated with Internet Explorer because it is the only browser that blatantly disregards many of the important standards set by the W3C. Firefox is standards-conpliant, and is also a lot more customizable.

Firefox Extensions:

All-In-One Sidebar

Manage bookmarks, history, downloads, and lots of other stuff from a convient side panel rather than the program menus.

Google Browser Sync

Coordinate bookmarks and other setting between multiple computers. That means that if you have Firefox installed on two different computers, and you add a bookmark on one computer, it will also appear on your bookmark list on your other computer.

TabMix Plus

Even more control over tab options.

Foxit PDF Reader

Tired of PDF files taking forever to load? Use Foxit and (I am not exaggerating here) they will load almost instantaneously. Super small, super fast program to replace the super large, super slow Adobe Reader.

Open Office

A free office suite. Open Office has programs equivalent to other (very expensive) office suites (such as Microsoft Office) which include a word processor, spreadsheet program, slide-show program, database program, drawing program, math program, and a few others.

Trillian Instant Messenger

My favorite of the all-in-one instant messengers. It covers AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, and maybe some others too. Very easy to use and organize, and very easy to skin.

FileZilla

A very intuitive and simple FTP client.

Wireshark

By far the best packet sniffer and protocol analyzer out there.

Security Tools

AVG Antivirus

A free anti-virus program with very thourough, regular updates. I'm told that this software is just as good if not better than some commercial anti-virus programs. Very easy to install and use.

Spybot Search and Destory

A free and very effective spyware removal and prevention tool.

Comodo Firewall

A free firewall to protect you from hackers and other intrusive threats to your computer. Comodo gives you more control over what it's doing, which is why I like it better than Zone Alarm.

CCleaner

A great program for cleaning unnescessary files from your computer. This will get rid of Windows temp files, temporary internet files, and other files you don't need that are just taking up space on your hard drive. Super easy to use. I recomend this program even to the most advanced users.

Graphics Software

Irfanview

Fast, simple, and very functional image conversion software. Also does some basic editing and effects. Great for resizing pictures with minimal distortion.

Microsoft GIF Animator

Simple program for editing and creating animated .gif files.

How to Make Animated GIF's (by me)

Paint.Net

Paint is my favorite graphics program ever. This is my second favorite. It is a glorified version of paint that adds layers, smart object selection, and some other fun features.

The GIMP

Basically open source Photoshop, but with a slightly more quirky interface.

Sound and Music Tools

Audacity Audio Editor

A fantastic free sound mixing, editing, and recoding program that reads and writes lots of formats.

Finale Notepad

Free music composition and notation software from the professionals.

CD Tools

BurnAtOnce CD and CD Image Burner

A small, fast, and simple way to burn .iso images to CD and blank re-writable CD's.

Windows ISO Ripper Extension

Add a 'create image from CD' option to your CD drive's right-click menu.

Free Website Services

Proboards Forums

Free online forums. They take care of all the hosting and software stuff, leaving you to manage only the important stuff, like how things look and what options are enabled. An online forum is a great way to coordinate communicaiton between a group of people over the internet. Proboards is highly customizable, and the support people are great. I've been running a Proboards forum for several years now, and I have never had a single complaint.

G-Mail

Google's free email service. G-Mail is the best free (or non-free for that matter) mail service offered online. Check your mail from anywhere. Easy to organize, and comes with a great spam filter and other useful tools. It can even check your other email addresses for you, and send mail from them, so that you can maintain multiple addresses without having to check multiple sites!

Geocities Personal Websites

Make your own website for free! Free hosting and free tools to let you drag and drop everything into place. I've used Geocities several times, and it really is a great service.

Image Shack

Easy, free image hosting that doesn't require you to register an account. Want to post a picture on a forum, email, or website, but don't have some place to put it? Image Shack is for you!

Meebo

Web-based instant messenger client covering AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk, and MSN. No download required. Great for using instant messenger from a computer you don't own.

DNS Stuff

A great website providing all sorts of free DNS services in one convenient place.

Other Resources

GRSites

A huge repository of free resources for website building and other exploits. GRSites has everything from textures to clipart to fonts. It also has several tools to combine its different resources into buttons and banners and the like, which can save you a ton of time. Easy to navigate and very few ads compared to other sites like this.

A-Z Free Clipart

Lots of ads and somewhat hard to navigate, but this is one of the few sites that actually offers a decent selection of free clipart.

ProDraw Web Buttons

Tons of free web buttons.

Font Face

A huge repository of excellent free (and some non-free) fonts.

Graphical Fonts

Graphical (not just one color) fonts, mostly ripped from video games.

Icon Factory

Great source for free icons.

Gnome-Look

Another good source for free icons.

Sounddogs

Large library of free sound effects.

Other Good Non-Free Stuff

WestHost Web Hosting

This is the hosting service I use. It is very affordable and comes with a great set of website tools. The support team is great. But best of all (and this is why I use them), each account gives you a 'Virtual Private Server.' That means you can log in remotely to your server and use it just like a Unix shell account. You can run programs (Java and other) on your server. This feature is huge, and almost no other hosting companies will allow you to do this. The ones that will cost up to 100x more than WestHost, whose plans start as low as about $4 a month. I have been absolutely thrilled with this company in every regard and recommend it to anyone.

FreePGS

Not exactly 100% free, but it might as well be. This is web hosting for a one time fee. That's right... it's not $3 a month or $3 a year... it's $3 one time, and then you have web hosting forever. That's exponentially cheaper than any other company I have ever seen, and it comes with a lot of great features including unlimited MySQL databases and plenty of daily bandwidth and disk space.
